Surviving Death: A Journalist Investigates Evidence for an Afterlife by Leslie Kean // Penny The Pincher
I have always loved books of this genre.
Coming from a household where UFO conversations and Life After Death talk is a frequent activity, this was right up my alley.
I was honestly intrigued by this book through description alone--I just read a bit off Amazon and it completely hooked me. I knew this author previously from another book in regards to UFOs and the like, so I already knew what I was going to expect with choosing this specific book from the rest.
Unlike most studies and television cases, where it's solely based on entertainment and all those bells and whistles--this book is the meat and bones of rational reporting and journalism with a twist of sly pop culture humor. Kean presented the best data and examined the taboo around the topic. "Surviving Death," Ms Kean takes on the topic much like her previous work, though, with some caveats. What she's examining is far more subjective and experience based. Therefore, I was far more skeptical until she writes about her own experiences with mediums, confronting her own grief. The historical parts are fascinating, and the case studies are interesting but these personal experiences, whether you believe or not, were moving and dramatic. Again, Ms Kean accomplished getting me to think and question my own biases about an often dismissed world of experience of things that may be real (or may not be).
I found it extremely uplifting firming up my experience and being able to smile once again seeing how others have handled their losses. The deep feeling of my loved one's presence was felt fairly quickly and has carried me on to deeper acceptance and finally to actual joy that my friend's suffering was over. Even though I had felt that (like the end to Les Miserables) it seemed too soon to say goodbye, it was the right thing.
I only had one problem with the book and that was the inclusion of stories of mediums toward the end of the book. I think this section would have been better as a separate entity. But overall, a nice read and I highly recommend.
